Mayor Whitmire sworn in the new City Council, Controller and At Large Members.
Mayor: His platform is going to be to listen and solve problems, as he is a problem solver. He thanked the new City Council and Controller. Only reason he rans is to make Houston great. He is proud of his daughters. He can’t wait to go to work, Houston has a wide diversity; intends to ignite the City. Challenges: The homeless is an issue that needs to be worked on, folks downtown don’t want to see homeless people on the sidewalks; money issues - affordability to own homes; infrastructure of city streets; Metro to partner in fixing the streets that the buses have messed up; Public safety - first is to acknowledge you have one; Officers from Austin and other cities are wanting to transfer to Houston in order to help public safety; Right now officers have to pay for their own guns and ammo at $1,000 each. This has to be fixed.
Help for Firefighters get the salary they are due. 1900 people are wanting to go to court, some are out on bond and continue to steal, etc.
We need a better system at collecting garbage pickup.
He is going to handle finances; First responders are improving. 80+ agencies don’t talk to each other; Divide the City to make sure all neighborhoods are getting the help they need.
Flooding - drainage issues has to be corrected.
LET’S GET TO WORK!!
